Seasoned Wisdom: Finding a Mentor Who Understands Your Current Season

Expanding your social circle can offer tremendous personal growth opportunities. By meeting new people, you open yourself up to the possibility of connecting with individuals who can inspire and motivate you to reach your full potential. If you have identified such a person and believe they would make a great mentor, here are a few steps you can take to cultivate that relationship.

Ask What Your (Potential) Mentor Has

You need to define exactly what it is that this person has that you want in your own life. Take a moment to reflect on what you admire about the person you're looking at - an amazing group of friends, passion for work, or maybe her frequent adventures.

Maybe he's spending quality time with her family, or playing the sport you're passionate about. Perhaps she's making a difference as a leader in the community, or showing a genuine concern for world affairs. Let their actions inspire you to be the best version of yourself. Remember, greatness is within reach if you open your heart and mind to the positive examples around you.

Study Your Mentor

To emulate your mentor's success, begin by closely observing their behavior and practices. Take note of what sets them apart and try to incorporate those elements into your own life. Pay attention to how they approach challenges and handle difficult situations, as well as their overall mindset and attitude towards success. By studying their actions and attitudes, you can gain valuable insights and take steps towards achieving your own goals.

If you find that your mentor's schedule is consistently full, it may be worth examining the strategies she uses. If your mentor is a speaker at national conferences, consider purchasing a copy of her presentations to listen to and learn from. If she has launched successful products, take note of how she writes her sales copy and applies effective marketing techniques.

Be Direct and Make that Request

After observing and gathering information, it is recommended to make a direct request to the person you are interested in learning from. Consider asking for a meeting over coffee or a conversation. For example, you could say something like, "I greatly appreciate the way you manage your business. Would it be possible to set up a meeting with you to ask some questions?" This approach allows you to gain further insights and knowledge from their experience.

Mentors hold varying opinions about whether or not to charge for their services. Some individuals are willing to invest their time to mentor others without payment as it brings them satisfaction to see someone else grow and develop. However, other mentors receive numerous requests for assistance and may need to charge for their time to ensure they can provide the necessary attention and focus to each mentee. This type of mentorship is commonly referred to as coaching. As a mentee, it is important to consider the costs associated with receiving coaching and determine whether it is a feasible option for you.

Offer to Barter

If you are unable to pay for coaching services, there are other options to consider. One of these is bartering, where you can offer your skills and services in exchange for coaching sessions. For instance, you can work as an intern for a few months, which can be a valuable opportunity to learn and grow under the guidance of your coach. If you are already experienced in your field, you can propose a joint venture partnership with the coach, which can be mutually beneficial for both parties. This way, you can still learn from your mentor while bringing value to the partnership.

Set a Timeline

Embarking on a mentorship or coaching journey is an exciting opportunity that should be approached with clarity and intention. Take the time to sit down with your mentor and establish mutual understanding and agreement. A clear beginning, middle, and end are essential to ensure the mentorship arrangement is aligned in both your goals.

Communicate your agreement clearly, perhaps through an email outlining the terms. For instance, “I'm excited to intern with you for six months to expand my knowledge and skills. In return, you've generously agreed to provide six coaching calls over the next six months. Let's work together to achieve our shared goals and make the most of this incredible opportunity.” This approach provides a sense of purpose and direction to your journey, allowing you both to achieve your goals with clarity and confidence.

Remember that your journey to success is constantly evolving. Just like a butterfly transforming from a caterpillar, you too will experience growth and change. Embrace this journey with open arms and have faith that you will find the guidance you need. Should you find yourself seeking new skills or perspectives along the way, do not hesitate to seek out a new mentor. Trust in your ability to adapt and keep flying towards your dreams.

Developing mindful friendships involves being conscious of your choices and intentionally selecting those that align with your values and goals. Avoid simply falling into friendships, it's not enough to have friends based on convenience, such as those you work with. While work friends can certainly become close friends, it's important to be intentional about fostering deeper connections.

Be open to making connections with people from unexpected places. As you cultivate these connections, keep an open mind and remain receptive to meeting new people who may bring positivity and a great deal of joy to your life.
