Distractions Lead to Procrastination

You roll out of bed in the morning, feeling enthusiastic and charged up to get started on whatever task or venture you’ve been putting off. Or maybe your energy is devoted to a new endeavor that you can’t wait to take a crack at. You savor your cup of joe, put on your clothes and ready yourself to begin work - but something happens that throws a wrench into your plans.

Maybe you open your email to find an invitation from a good friend to go shopping--or, worse yet, succumb to the siren-call of Facebook. Maybe Netflix releases your favorite show and sends an alert your phone. It doesn't matter what it is; there are always going to be things or people who will attempt to tear away your focus and lead you into procrastinating. If, however, you're mindful, you can resist their temptations.

There is a straightforward way to avoid procrastinating: make the task you've been putting off your number one priority and work on it first thing each day. Before you turn in for the night, create a blueprint of what needs to be accomplished tomorrow. Identify the three most important tasks; they should all be related to this project or several different undertakings that can push you forward.

Make a note of three things that you want to do. They don't have to be complicated projects; in fact it's better if you can finish them each within an hour. When you get up in the morning, or arrive at the office, review your list and work on these three tasks first before anything else. Don't check emails, don't scroll through social media, and don't even take any calls or go to meetings until they are finished. Make sure they are your top priority.

Starting the most important tasks first is a surefire way to have a successful day. You'll be more productive and motivated, and there's no longer an excuse for procrastinating. Don't put it off until you're too exhausted to get to it.

In addition, being aware of the sources that prompt you to delay tasks is beneficial. Whenever you find yourself postponing something, take a moment to reflect and identify what made you put it off. Then take steps to stop it from happening again in the future.
